# Does a duplicate still show after I hide a photo?

**Short answer:** **Yes.** Hiding acts on one photo. A duplicate, such as a second save or an edited copy, is a separate photo and stays in your library, search and memories. Photos lists duplicates under **Collections › Utilities › Duplicates**. Hide every copy, or merge them first so only one is left to hide.

## Why it works this way

Apple's Photos app finds duplicate photos and videos and lists them in the **Duplicates** collection under Utilities. If there are none, the collection doesn't appear.

Each duplicate is its own item. Apple says hidden photos move to the Hidden collection and don't appear elsewhere, but that applies to the item you hid, not to its copies.

Who this matters for: anyone you thought you had hidden the photo from. Check before you hand the phone over.

## Find and hide every copy

1. **Open Utilities › Duplicates.** In **Photos**, tap **Collections**, then **Utilities**, then **Duplicates**.
2. **Merge the set (optional).** Tap **Merge** next to the set, then **Merge [number] Items**, to keep one copy.
3. **Hide what is left.** Open the remaining copy, tap **••• › Hide** and confirm.

### Why can I still see a photo after hiding it?

Most often because a second copy exists. A duplicate, an edited copy saved as new or a picture saved twice from a message is a separate photo, so hiding one leaves the other in your library. Open Collections › Utilities › Duplicates in Photos and hide or merge every copy.

### Where are duplicate photos on iPhone?

In the Photos app, tap Collections, then Utilities, then Duplicates. Photos lists sets of duplicate photos and videos there and lets you merge each set into one. If you have no duplicate photos or videos, the Duplicates collection doesn't appear at all.
